Vitamin B1 deficiency

Tip: The subject of this entry is not beriberi. Vitamin B1 deficiency (thiamine deficiency) is a systemic disease caused by insufficient or lack of vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine) in the body. It is clinically used to call this disease beriberi. Thiamine is an important vitamin involved in the metabolism of sugar and energy in the body, and its deficiency can lead to dysfunction of digestive, nervous and cardiovascular systems. There are three types of beriberi clinically known as "dry" neural beriberi. The latter mostly occurs in the elderly, with symptoms of wasting, mainly neurological abnormalities. "Infant type" is severe and manifests with acute cardiovascular symptoms, which can cause death if not treated promptly.
