There are two major types of congenital and acquired, congenital trichiasis has trichiasis after birth, usually in the lower eyelids. Because the eyelashes are stuck to the eyeballs, the baby often blinks and tears. If the cornea is stabbed, the eyes will be red and afraid of light.
The most common cause of acquired trichiasis is caused by trachoma. Because trachoma can cause scarring of the orbital conjunctiva, which leads to eyelid varus and trichiasis. Eye burns, eyelid trauma, or eyelid surgery can also cause eyelid scarring and normal eyelashes to the eyeball. In addition, diseases such as pemphigus in the eye may cause trichiasis due to scarring of the conjunctiva of the eyelid.
